Why Join a Small Group?

Small groups are a great way to connect.

In every church I’ve served, one of the first ministries I began was a small group program. When people gather in classrooms and living rooms, or even online communities, lives and communities are transformed.

People have experienced God’s love most tangibly when they have dared to be authentic with others – telling their stories, asking their questions, and discovering profound grace. Small groups offer sacred space to share life, hold each other’s doubts, and celebrate moments of insight.

Our small group program has been a shining light the last three years. I have loved watching new friendships form, new leaders emerge, and spiritual growth take root. Keep it up. Don’t miss out on this quarter’s small group offerings. Sign up today.

If you have questions about being part of a small group, please reach out. I’d be happy to listen to your questions or concerns and help you take the next right step in your faith journey.

In Christ,

Pastor Derek

Bishop Budde is the spiritual leader of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington and the Washington National Cathedral. While she came to national prominence during a prayer service when she implored the new administration to have mercy on the people in our country who are scared right now, this moment was the culmination of a lifetime spent thinking about those pivot points when we are called to push past our fears and act with strength. In this book, Bishop Budde explores the universality of these moments, weaving together her personal experiences along with stories from scripture, history and pop culture.

We all walk through dark places. Some of us have come out on the other side. Some of us are right in the middle of it. And some of us can feel a shadow beginning to fall.

This fall, you’re invited to a small group centered on Learning to Walk in the Dark by beloved author and pastor Barbara Brown Taylor. Honest and warm, Taylor invites us to reconsider the dark, not as something to fear or escape, but as a sacred space where God might just meet us in ways the light never could. This is not a book about fixing or avoiding the hard parts of life; it’s about finding holiness in the shadows.

Join us for honest conversation, quiet reflection, and just maybe, surprising hope.

Participants may also choose to contribute in various ways to the All Saints Day worship service on Sunday, November 2 at 9am and 10:30am.

This 20th Anniversary Edition includes two new chapters and two new Saint Brigit, who invites us to take a spiritual look at climate change, and Howard Thurman, noted pastor, author, and contemplative, who invites us to explore how spiritual practices inspire social transformation.
