It’s no secret that we have been more intentional about reaching out into the community the last couple of years. It’s been an important part of our Strategic Plan, and it is an important part of who we are. I am grateful for the support, generosity, and encouragement we have within our faith community. We are only able to reach out because of your faithfulness. We don’t share these things to toot our own horn, but to highlight the ways that God is using our local church to make a positive impact in our corner of the world.
Here are a few things that have been going on the last couple of months.
Aurora Community Day
The Church in Aurora was a featured sponsor for the 2nd Annual Community Day at the Aurora High School stadium. We provided a bouncy house for kids, handed out stress balls, and built relationships with community members. In a Facebook shout-out from the Aurora All-Sports Boosters, they thanked TCIA adding, “They are true champions for the Aurora community and our students.” After the event, one parent texted Liz, “What you guys do for the community is amazing! So thankful for you all!”
School Supply Drive
With the help of Howard Hanna, community members, church members, and the Moore Trust (Portage Foundation), we provided a complete list of school supplies for 84 students, as well as helped cover the cost of all-day kindergarten for two students.
Weekly Food Distribution
Each week we distribute food to more than 40 households (providing for more than 140 individuals). With the help of individual donors and community organizations like The Moore Trust, Food2Share, Aurora Rotary, Aurora Community Gardens, Aurora Community Theater, Aurora City Schools, Evexia, Starbucks of Aurora, and Panera of Bainbridge, we’re able to provide fresh produce, eggs, milk, meat, and other perishable and non-perishable foods. This year, we have provided $22,000 of groceries to 4,423 people.
This year, we have been able to provide financial assistance to 22 family units (representing more than 80 people), with nearly $6,700 of expenses. We’ve helped provide housing, transportation, utility assistance, clothing, bedding, childcare, food, and much more.
A small, but important ministry of our church, in partnership with Family and Community Services. We deliver 20 meals to 4 households in Aurora.
Haven Home Meals
With the help of Women’s Guild, 3-H Circle we provide monthly, hot meals to the Haven Home in Cleveland. The Haven Home is a homeless shelter for women and children. They house nearly 40 each day.
We’ve partnered with US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants to host two supply drives that resulted in three truck loads of households and personal items. These supplies will be distributed to refugees and immigrants in the Cleveland area.
Service Project Sundays
Beginning this year, we started quarterly service project Sundays. The volunteer Outreach Team has provided opportunities for the entire church to be engaged in service to those in need in our community and surrounding areas. In January, we packed over 300 homeless kits for Kent Community Center and Center of Hope (Ravenna). In May, we painted over 250 wooden cars for Woodworkers with Heart, who will deliver the cars to area children’s hospitals. Be on the look out for our October Service Project Sunday.
