BAPTISM Jesus said, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28.19) We as human beings have the need to be wanted, cared for and loved. Through Baptism, the Church proclaims that you are loved and wanted, if not “perfectly” by your earthly family, always by your Heavenly Father. You are a unique and special child of God. Baptism marked Jesus’ public ministry and He entrusted the ministry of baptism to His disciples. Christian Baptism marks our new identity with Christ, as a member of the body of Christ. In the history of the Christian Church, baptism has been experienced in different modes and at different ages. Immersion (or dunking) highlights being buried with Christ and raised with Him into new life. Pouring symbolizes the anointings of the Old Testament. Sprinkling underscores the cleansing power of the Holy Spirit. When adults are baptized, we celebrate both God’s love and justifying grace together in one act. God’s offer of a relationship is accepted. In the baptism of infants and children, congregations celebrate God’s unconditional love and promise for children’s lives. Regardless of the mode or the timing, baptism let’s us know who we are and who’s we are -- a unique and special child of God. To be baptized is to be free to serve Christ and others with true dedication and responsibility. Baptisms at The Church in Aurora may be celebrated publicly during worship services or in private ceremonies, in consultation with one of our ministers. The consultations may be scheduled by contacting one of the ministers directly or through the Church Office. See Contact Us. |
